I have been teaching 8th grade ELA for 12 years with the past 11 years in Revere, MA. I did not take the straight path through college to teaching and had a variety of previous jobs including bridal consultant, retail store manager and pharmacy assistant.
As a new teacher, I benefited greatly from being able to co-teach, observe and be coached by my podcast co-host Christine. I love to learn about learning and spend lots of time listening to education podcasts, reading articles and books related to education research.
I love being in the classroom and I believe I have many years still ahead me. In the past few years I have begun to focus on being a teacher leader by supervising student teachers, becoming a facilitator for our building based professional growth time (PGT or PLC) and a mentee for teachers new to our district.
I have earned Masters in Literature and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Educational Leadership and Management. Outside of school I enjoy reading, traveling and especially being an auntie.
During my twelve years in the classroom, I taught ELA to students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade in Revere, MA. I especially loved working in inclusion settings and collaborating with colleagues and families to bring authentic audiences to my students as often as possible. Throughout that time I earned my Masters in Secondary Education and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Literacy Leadership and obtained my Reading Specialist License.
In 2011, I begin my journey with Universal Design for Learning (UDL), using the framework to improve my own instruction and have enjoyed working with colleagues both in my school, district and around the country to apply the principles of UDL to our schools. I have been fortunate enough to attend and facilitate at the Harvard Graduate School for Education UDL Summer Institute, intern with staff members at CAST and provide Professional Development around Universal Design for Learning for local districts in MA as well as virtually for districts in other states.
I have never wanted to be anything other than a teacher for my entire life, so it was with a bit of a heavy heart that I stepped out of the classroom to become a Literacy Coach. Fortunately, as I enter my 8th year as a Literacy Coach, I have found ways to be in classrooms every day, build relationships with students and staff alike, and most importantly-collaborate with colleagues like Kerri on a daily basis. My professional relationship with Kerri has been a lifeline to helping me maintain a place in the classroom!
Outside of the school world I enjoy spending time with my family--my husband, daughter (Freshman), son (7th grade) and our dog Howie. Obviously I love reading books and listening to podcasts on a wide range of topics. I also enjoy walking outdoors and playing with my growing kettlebell collection for exercise.
